The role of optometrists in managing contact lens patients is continually evolving. This interactive debate will explore the role of optometrists, not only in the fitting of lenses but also in the context of the entire lifecycle of contact lens use. Our experts will discuss how optometrists act as "Eye Health Managers," supporting patients from the initial fitting through long-term care, with a focus on maintaining healthy eyes throughout this time.
Based on the World Council of Optometry's (WCO) Competency Framework, the discussion will highlight the importance of specific competencies that ensure the highest standard of care for patients. A key topic will be patient education, particularly regarding appropriate habits related to contact lens use and the role this plays in preventing discomfort and complications. The key role of the optometrist is to manage the patient in a way that prevents problems before they occur, rather than merely reacting when issues have already arisen.
